by Kindergarden Class (2K 10) Saint James Academy ~~~ Valerie Leonhart Smalkin is a puppet meister who provides quality entertainment for children with original songs, music and puppets:
In a kindergarten class at Saint James Academy (Monkton, MD), Valerie created an after school Puppet Workshop with Silly Goose (her puppet repertory resource) (www.sillygooseandval.com). Children ages 5 to 8 culminated their workshop experience with a performance at a Children's Dinner Concert held at St. James Academy. The puppet show was directed by Valerie and created by her little student participants who drew the basic creature designs on black poster board. Valerie recalled the pre-show production:
"The students taped the light-wire to the drawings and then learned to hold the front of each board toward the audience with varying amounts success. We divided the students into 4 groups and rehearsed 2
times dancing on stage with their creations, staying on stage, and then dancing off."
The results were stunning!
And the parents and students LOVED it.
In an interesting after-show enthusiasm, many of the children were so attached to their Lightwire puppets, their parents wound up purchasing them from Valerie,
as a memento from the performance.
